Our
journey into the Vizsla
world began in earnest in
2005, but can be traced back
to the 1960's in Long Island.
While walking my Scottish
Terrier, my dog from
kindergarten through high
school, we’d occasionally
see a man walking his
Vizsla. Its beauty made me
think “I love my dog, but
one day would love to have
one of those.” After college
I lived without a dog for
years, enjoying the company
of my friends’ dogs, mostly Golden, Lab
& Chesapeake Retrievers. In
early 2005 my wife Ginny
asked what I wanted for my
birthday that summer. I said
“a Vizsla” - Ginny responded
“a what?”
Ginny grew up with Beagles,
so the idea of a dog wasn’t
foreign, but she never said
yea or nay. I quickly seized
the opportunity and a friend
introduced me to Jean Matmor
of Valley Hunter, who
introduced us to Mary
Rathbun of Egri Vizslas in
Louisiana. Mary had
a small litter of three
Vizsla puppies as a result
of a second breeding of her
bitch CH Egri Elegans, JH,
ROM to a male she also bred,
CH Egri I Like Ike, CDX, MH,
AX, OAJ, VC, ROM, owned and
loved by Dr. Edward and
Adele Neupert.
Of the three
pups, there was one bitch
still available and that
girl became our Luna, now CH Egri Luna Bella of
Edisonia, JH VC CGC. Four
years and a bunch of fun,
rewarding Vizsla experiences
later, we became “breeders”
with our own kennel name.
A wild ride for someone who
started off just wanted a pet V!
We have only had one litter
as all we wanted was a
"piece" of our Luna moving
forward. That we have
in the pup we kept, Cosmo.
Three of our pups may one
day be bred and from those
pups we may get another girl
to follow in her grand dam
Luna's paw steps. In
the interim we will enjoy
our fine red dogs and would
be more than pleased to
refer any interested parties
to Vizsla breeders we admire
and respect.
We wish you well on
your own journey into the
wonderful, loving and
versatile world of the
Hungarian or Magyar Vizsla!
